Spring Has Arrived!

It has been a long winter, with the anticipation of spring brings great excitement!
April has been a cooler month with several snow storms but as the month ended May began with warm sunny days. When the birds return and you hear their songs, you know it's spring. Thank You Lord!
Gardening has been something I've enjoyed for years. I've tried all sorts of different methods trying to find different ways to simplify and to have less weeding. We have been working toward no-till (our rototiller quit so that makes it final). Actually we (more my son) has been using the broad fork and it's amazing how well that works to even break new ground. It's also a great workout! This year we are trying something new which we've heard such good things about. WOOL! Who would of thought using wool in the garden can have so many benefits! My son started with a small sheep flock before Ken died, it was Ken who supported him and worked to help get him started. So now we have a pile of wool that will help us get started in this new venture.
Wool first off is great for mulching in the garden. It will provide a barrier to stop or choke out the weeds. Sounds great to me. Next it absorbs moisture and keeps the plants from drying out. So less watering. Another thing is as the wool breaks down it releases nutrients to the plant like nitrogen, potassium, sulfur, magnesium and iron. Sounds like a win - win to me!
But if you do rototill, it can and will get all tangled in the blades.
Oh one thing I tried last fall, I planted a bunch of seeds in the garden then mulched it. Garlic (which you usually plant in fall) carrots, beets, turnips, kale and several others. I am so excited to watch for new growth as the seeds germinate when the soil warms.
I will keep you posted on how it all works out. I will probably try other things too, which I will let you know what works and what doesn't. Have a beautiful day! Rejoice for this is the day the Lord has made!
